Counselors and peer-recovery specialists play a vital role in helping Kentuckians affected by problem gambling. This section offers training opportunities, certification guidance, research, and practical tools to support your work and strengthen care for individuals and families.
Why This Matters
Problem and disordered gambling touches thousands of Kentuckians, yet only a small percentage of those struggling seek help. Barriers such as stigma, lack of awareness, or not knowing where to turn often keep people from reaching out. Still, the need is significant: survey data suggests more than 64,000 adults in Kentucky may live with a gambling disorder, with many more showing problem gambling traits.
The consequences can be far-reaching, including depression, substance use, financial strain, and impacts on families, employers, and communities. Academic research estimates the societal cost of disordered gambling in Kentucky at more than $500 million annually. At the same time, recovery is possible—and calls to helplines, Gamblers Anonymous attendance, and treatment participation are on the rise.
Unfortunately, the number of certified gambling counselors remains low, leaving many areas of Kentucky underserved. That’s why the Kentucky Council on Problem Gambling (KYCPG) encourages providers to pursue professional certification and offers tools, research, and training to help meet the growing demand for support.
